Matte Screen Protector Review: The Upgrade I'd Buy Again
This matte screen protector review has a very simple takeaway: after a month on my Oppo Find N6, I genuinely think more people should try one. The feel is better, reflections basically disappear, fingerprints build up way less, and on my phone I have not noticed a meaningful hit to screen quality. The only real catch is installation, because if you are using a less mainstream phone, getting one fitted cleanly can be a nightmare.
The hardest part was not using it, it was getting it installed
The biggest reason you might not want to do this is also the most annoying one: matte screen protectors can be way harder to install than standard glass screen protectors. If you have something mainstream like an iPhone or a Samsung, this probably will not apply as much, but finding one for my Oppo Find N6 was painful.
At the time I made the video, I could not find a single matte screen protector for the Oppo Find N6 on Amazon. There were tempered screen protectors, frosted cases, matte protectors for other Oppo devices, and a few third-party options that looked risky because I was not even sure they were matte. Some also had selfie-camera notch cutouts, which I really do not like, or they were privacy display protectors, which was not what I wanted.
Eventually I found a very inexpensive matte hydrogel screen protector on AliExpress and bought two, just in case I messed up the installation. That was the right instinct, because the protectors did not come with any installation device. They just came with the classic accessories we used to struggle with, and my first attempt had too many bubbles that I could not get rid of. The second attempt was even worse.
I ended up ordering four more and taking them to a phone repair shop called Mobile Experts. The first install looked good at first, but then I noticed a bubble at the top and the whole protector was slightly misaligned. I went back, asked if he could reinstall a new one, and when I returned, it was perfectly installed.

The first and biggest reason I recommend a matte screen protector is the feel. It is hard to describe without actually using it, but the closest comparison I can make is writing with a pencil on a crisp A4 piece of paper versus writing with a pen on glossy photo paper. There is a tactility to it that glass just does not have.
Within about 5 minutes of using my Oppo Find N6 with the matte protector installed, I could not really figure out why this is not something we see on mainstream smartphone displays already. It just makes interacting with the screen feel nicer in a way that is immediately obvious once it is on your phone.
Screen quality was better than I expected
The obvious concern with any matte finish is screen quality. I expected to notice some kind of drop, but to my eyes, I have not noticed any discernible impact to the performance of the cover display on my Oppo Find N6. On its own, I have had no issue with screen quality or display brightness.
I am sure if I held my phone side by side with another Oppo Find N6 without the protector, I would see some kind of difference. There may be the faintest dip in sharpness and brightness. But isolated, in everyday use, that has not bothered me at all, and the benefits easily outweigh that supposed negative for me.
Anti-reflection is where matte really wins
The anti-reflection benefit is ridiculous. People raved about the anti-reflective screens on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S25 Ultra, but this matte screen protector feels like that idea turned way up. When I put my Oppo Find N6 next to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the difference was night and day.
On the Oppo Find N6, I could barely see any perceptible reflections. In comparison, the Galaxy S25 Ultra almost looked like I was holding up a mirror, even though that display is considered one of the best for anti-reflectiveness. To my eyes, it is not even close.
Fingerprints are no longer something I think about all day
The other huge advantage is fingerprint resistance. A matte screen protector makes it so much harder to get a build-up of fingerprints and smudges. If you have oil or food on your fingers, marks will still appear, but normal daily use is much cleaner.
Before installing the matte protector, I would wipe my display down multiple times a day just to keep it clean. Now I might wipe it once or twice a week, if that. Usually, I only bother because I am filming a video with the phone, not because the screen is annoying me.
One niche filming issue: variable ND filters do not play nicely
There is one very specific side note for people who film phones for a living. If you film a phone with a matte screen protector while using a variable ND filter, the colors of the display can get all out of whack. I do not know the full science behind it, but it makes filming with that setup pretty much a complete non-starter.
The workaround is simple enough: remove the variable ND filter and stop down, or use a fixed ND filter instead. That is super niche, but if it applies to you, it is worth knowing before you cover your phone display with a matte layer.
Should you buy a matte screen protector?
Yes, I wholeheartedly think most people should try a matte screen protector. It feels exceptionally great to use, offers fantastic anti-reflective properties, significantly lowers fingerprint build-up, and still adds a layer of protection. On my Oppo Find N6, it does all of that without any noticeable impact on screen quality or brightness.
